HAVE YOU MOVED IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS????

If you have moved in the past FIVE years does the Department of Public Safety have your latest mailing address. If they do not you will not receive your license renewal application when it becomes due. Make SURE the DPS has your latest address!!

Call 617-727-3200 to update your address.

522CMR 18.00 states:
"Any Massachusetts Engineer or Fireman who is not presently employed in the commonwealth, and cannot obtain the required continuing education necessary to renew their license may, upon written request at the time of renewal, request that their license be placed in inactive status until such time that the continuing education requirements are fulfilled."

The DPS maintains two lists of licenses, one active and one inactive.

List 1.
Persons that have paid their renewal fee and submitted a "Certificate of Completion" that they have completed 30 hours of Continuing Education. These are full force licenses good for five years.

List 2.
Persons that have submitted their renewal form and renewal fee but did not complete the required 30 hours of continuing education. These persons cannot operate HP boilers and turbines. They will remain on this list as long as they submit their renewal fee every five years. They will not be issued a full force license until they complete their 30 hours of continuing education.

Chapter 146 Section 67 states "Licenses not renewed at the expiration date shall become void, and after one year be reinstated only by re-examination of the licensee."

"Persons in charge" should make a visual check, of licenses and renewal dates; to be sure all employees have the proper licenses.

A misunderstanding about this section has led some to believe that after your license expires you still have a year before you have to take a new examination. As the Law above states once your license is not renewed by the expiration date it becomes void and cannot be used.

If you have any questionsplease contact the Steam Engineering Institute or the Department of Public Safety for clarification.
